Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas: Empowering Rural Education through JNVST
In accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986), the Government of India founded Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNVs). These institutions serve as co-educational residential schools that are fully funded and overseen by the Government of India through an autonomous organization known as the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Admissions to JNVs are carried out through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) for Class VI. The medium of instruction in JNVs is the mother tongue or regional language until Class VIII, after which English is utilized for Mathematics and Science, while Hindi is used for Social Science. Students attending JNVs participate in board examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Navodaya Admission 2026: Key Details
Although education in schools is offered free of charge, covering board and lodging, uniforms, and textbooks, a monthly fee of Rs. 600 is applicable only to students in Classes IX to XII for the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN). However, students belonging to SC/ST categories, Divyang students, all female students, and those whose family income is below the poverty line (BPL) are exempt from this fee.
For children of Government employees who do not qualify for the exemptions (which include students from Classes VI to VIII, all SC/ST and female students, as well as wards of BPL families), the Vikas Nidhi fee will be established at Rs. 1500 per month or the actual Children Education Allowance received by the parent per month, whichever is lower.
Nevertheless, the VVN fee shall not be less than Rs. 600 per student per month. The objective is to deliver high-quality modern education that integrates a robust cultural component, instills values, enhances environmental awareness, and includes adventure activities and physical education for gifted children, primarily from rural backgrounds. Furthermore, the initiative aims to promote national integration by enabling the movement of students between Hindi and Non-Hindi speaking states.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Exam 2026
The JNV Selection Test for entry into Class VI at JNVs for the academic year 2026-27 is planned to be conducted in two phases. The initial phase is set for Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 11:30 A.M. for a designated list of JNV schools, whereas the subsequent phase will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:30 A.M. for the other JNVs.

Reservation for NVS Admission 2026-27
At least 75% of the seats in every district are designated for candidates hailing from rural areas, while the remaining seats are allocated based on district-wide merit from both urban and rural applicants.
Reservations for SC and ST are made in accordance with their population proportions within the district, ensuring a minimum of 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST, with a combined cap of 50%. These reservations may be interchanged if there are no qualified candidates available in one category.
Furthermore, 27% of the seats are reserved for OBC candidates according to the Central OBC list, while those not included in the list will be classified as General category. A minimum of one-third of the total seats is reserved for girls, and they are given preference to fulfill this quota if required. Rural-open seats are distributed block-wise, based on data regarding the rural population. Additionally, there is a reservation for Divyang individuals (children with disabilities), which encompasses those with blindness, hearing impairments, locomotor disabilities, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, and victims of acid attacks, provided they possess at least 40% certified disability as per the norms set by the Government of India.

JNV Admission Card and Selection Exam 2026-27
The admit cards will be released according to the schedule established by NVS, which will be made available on the application portal. Candidates and their parents will have the chance to download the admit cards at no cost prior to the JNVST 2026 examination. The results of the written examination will be published for Summer-bound JNVs by March 2026 and for Winter-bound JNVs by May 2026. The Principal of the respective Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya will also notify the provisionally selected candidates via telephone on their registered mobile numbers, followed by a notification dispatched through speed post. NVS will issue only two wait lists to address any vacancies that may occur due to candidates’ refusal or failure to provide the required essential certificates. Detailed Admission Procedure for Parents and Students
Admission to Class VI in JNVs is specific to each district. A student must be studying in Class V during the academic session 2025–26 at a government, government-aided, or recognized school situated in the same district as the JNV. Admission is restricted to the JNV of that particular district.
The candidate must be a bona fide resident of the district. A valid residential certificate from a competent government authority must be submitted by the parent at the time of admission. If the district was divided after the establishment of the JNV and no new JNV exists in the new district, the admission eligibility will follow the boundaries of the original district.
The candidate’s age should be between 01 May 2014 and 31 July 2016 (inclusive of both dates). This requirement applies to all categories, including SC, ST, OBC, Divyang, and General. A government-issued birth certificate is mandatory. If there are any doubts regarding the candidate’s age, a medical board will be consulted, and its decision will be final.
The student must be enrolled in Class V for the entire academic year 2025–26 in a recognized school within the same district. Candidates who were not promoted to Class V before 31 July 2025 or those who have completed Class V in previous sessions are not eligible.
The student should have completed Classes III, IV, and V in one full academic session each from government, aided, or recognized schools. Continuity of study is important for eligibility.
Students from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are eligible if they possess a valid ‘B’ certificate issued on or before 15 September 2025 and meet the required age limits. Their rural or urban status will be determined by their place of residence, not by the NIOS center. NIOS study centers must be accredited.
Candidates who have previously appeared are not allowed. A student can take the JNV Selection Test only once. NVS will check data from previous years to identify repeaters, and such applications will be canceled at any stage, including after provisional selection.
The Aadhaar number is essential for both application and admission processes. Should the child not yet possess an Aadhaar, they are required to apply with parental consent prior to registration. In the interim, candidates may register provisionally by providing a residence certificate until the Aadhaar is obtained. It is necessary to present the Aadhaar during the selection test and at the time of final admission. Additionally, JNVs provide Aadhaar enrollment services for students.
To qualify for the rural quota, the student must have completed full academic sessions in Classes III, IV, and V at schools situated in rural areas within the same district. A minimum of 75% of the total seats is allocated for candidates from rural backgrounds.
Students who have attended even a single day at an urban school during Classes III to V will be classified as urban candidates. The classification of urban or rural is determined by the location of the school as specified by the government.
